All About Sauna

A sauna is a small room or building designed as a place to experience dry or wet heat sessions, or an establishment with one or more of these facilities. The steam and high heat make the bathers perspire. Infrared therapy is often referred to as a type of sauna, but according to the Finnish sauna organisations, infrared is not a sauna.

What are the benefits and risks of a sauna?

Saunas have been used for thousands of years and are still popular today. A sauna can help people to unwind and relax, and it may have other health benefits.

Sweating has long been used as a therapy. The Mayans used sweat houses 3,000 years ago, according to Harvard Health Publications. In Finland, saunas have been used for thousands of years, and 1 in 3 Finns still use them. In the United States (U.S.), there are thought to be over a million saunas.

The main benefits proposed for saunas are for relaxation and cardiovascular health. However, a sauna may not be suitable for everyone.

Top 5 Facts: Saunas 건마탑

❶ A Finnish beginning – The original Finnish saunas were pits dug into the ground in which a fire was created to heat stones. By throwing water over them, steam could be generated to increase the overall pit temperature.

❷ Wood – During the Industrial Revolution in the late-18th century saunas evolved to use a metal woodstove with a chimney. This enabled temperatures to be increased up to 90°C (194°F).

❸ Modern – Modern saunas can approach 100°C (212°F) as they have systems to control their humidity. If this wasn’t controlled people could be scalded by the air temperature.

❹ Sauna vs steam room – Although saunas and steam rooms can sometimes be confused, they are different. Saunas can produce both dry and wet heat, while steam rooms can only produce wet heat.

❺ Splashing out – The best saunas come equipped with a dedicated plunge pool or cold showering unit. These are recommended to cool the body back down to normal after the intense heat.
